Walter Valverde Salazar has been growing specialty coffee on his farm “Maria Rita” for over 20 years. It is located in the Los Santos, Canton Aserrri region. Although the production on his 2 hectare farm in small, he takes great pride in the husbandry of his Catuai and Caturra varietal plants. The farm is approximately 15,000 meters, of which 10,000 are cultured Caturra varieties and some Catuai. It receives the morning sunlight and is kept cool by cloudiness in the afternoons, and has a variety of fruit trees that provide shade in the Summer. He also attributes the high quality of his coffee to his practice of fertilizing twice a yearly. With the technical assistance and beneficio provided by ASOPROAAA, Walter has been able to establish consistent quality and improve the yield on his farm. Walter is excited that the “Maria Rita” name is being recognized and appreciated by the consumer. The name of the farm that Don Walter gave it is in honor and memory of his mother, Maria Rita Salazar. Don Walter is a very simple person and humble with exceptional virtues in coffee production.
